Product Overview
At the written tempo some difficulty may be encountered reading the syncopated rhythms; this is a perfect example of when to slow down the tempo and rehearse individual sections for clarity and consistency. Some of the rhythms are repeated and there may well be a tendency for some players to learn by rote; the danger here will be when the rhythms subtly change.
The source melody for this work is well known, however conductors will need to pay attention to how it has been presented here so that it remains clearly stated in its various forms. An example is Lindsay’s treatment of the tune at 18 where it is spread over different sections of the ensemble.
Rhythmic drive, clarity and consistency of articulation combined with appropriate dynamic balance are necessary for a convincing performance of this work.
