Lieut-Colonel Alan Burns is deeply committed to the mission of The Salvation Army. After his conversion as an 18-year-old in 1972, one of Alan's first Salvation Army activities was to sell The War Cry, the Salvation Army newspaper, in the local pubs and bars, and thus his interest in mission began. At the same time, an accompanying desire as a new Christian was to reach up to God in prayer and to be a holy, authentic follower of Christ. This book is born out of two important themes - mission and spiritual renewal. In examining the 'charisms' (the gifts and graces given by the Holy Spirit) of early Salvationists, and the current situation of the movement today, Burns applies fresh thinking and suggests new strategies for growth and spiritual renewal.
