The well-loved hymn “He Hideth My Soul in the cleft of the rock” is arranged here in a relaxed bluesy jazz waltz setting. To achieve the blues style it is important for the music to be relaxed and not forced. It’s not a fast swing; it’s just nice and easy.
After the introduction the tune is introduced by the 1st Cornets at Letter A. Whilst the majority of parts are written quite simply, the Basses and Percussion must maintain that relaxed groove.
Letter C features a jazz cornet solo which may be read as written or improvised (chords supplied). If desired, instead of the same soloist carrying out the solo for the whole 36 bars, it may be split with another soloist picking it up at the double bar line. Furthermore, the solo part may also be handed to a Trombone soloist from the double bar line if desired, making sure that part III is covered somewhere else.
The whole band comes in at Letter D for the final chorus of the tune. This section also features a slightly different chord progression. Attention to dynamics and swells in this section will make it more effective and come to life.
It is a pleasure to introduce the music of Sam Creamer to the
Noel Jones Series. Sam is actively involved in the many
aspects of music ministry at the Carina- Mt Gravatt Corps in
Queensland where his numerous arrangements are regularly
used by music sections of the corps. In his ‘spare time’ he
directs the Divisional Big Band.
