This is the little known story of the Salvation Army's involvement with Maori, from 1884 - to the present day, as presented in a collection of contemporary documents, letters and articles. Its centrepiece is Canoe on the River by Ivy Cresswell, the story of Ernest Holdaway and the mission on the Whanganui River from 1888 - 1902. The documents also cover the Army's activity in the Bay of Plenty 1902 - 1928, on the East Coast from 1934 - 1992, and nationally in more recent years.
