This well known song was first published in 'Hymns Old and New'. Forty years later The Salvation Army song book of 1930 contained the words, and in April 1940 the words and music were printed in 'The Musical Salvationist'. The catalyst for the composition of the song was a young man's testimony. Standing to his feet during a meeting led by D.I.. Moody, the young man announced - "I'm not quite sure - but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey."
The song reminds us of the dual responsibility of Christians to trust and obey. In John 14 we read the words of Jesus as he instructs his disciples; "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust God; trust also in me." (14:1) "If you love me, you will obey what I command." (14:15)
