Sing A New Song

The Australia Southern Territory Creative Arts Department is pleased to introduce a new vocal series which we believe will meet the needs of Songster Brigades and Choirs throughout the Army.

Designed with smaller vocal ensembles in mind, yet still suitable for larger groups, this new series features songs by Australian composers in styles which are accessible to contemporary congregations. The series is written primarily for two female and one male part; though cued parts are included in some titles for Bass and other divisi voices when required.

Recorded CD accompaniment tracks are available for each song allowing leaders to rehearse each section of the song and provide for performances by groups who have no or limited musical support.

While the soloist certainly carries the greater part of the text in this song, it is important to note that the melodic and rhythmic interest is shared between the soloist and the choir.

The rich choral texture should be a source of strength and majesty, particularly as the song builds into the key change.

Ensure that the choir is singing through the phrases and honouring the full value of notes to create this wall of sound. It is important to note that the final chorus (b. 42) should not return to the original tempo, but rather settle at a slower majestic tempo in restating what is now well-known musical material. Although the song ends in a rather subdued and soft fashion, it is imperative that the intensity of the music is not lost even as the volume decreases. !

The lyrics for “You Alone” were the inspired words of a triumphant soul following a time of great hardship and perseverance. The text conveys thanksgiving and gratitude to our Sovereign Lord in essence as a hymn of praise. As such, “You Alone” makes reference to the great hymn of the church, “Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven.” ! Janet Muir, together with her family, is a faithful soldier of the Parramatta Corps in the Australian Eastern Territory and has made significant contributions to programs which facilitate pastoral care and fellowship within the Corps family. She is a contralto soloist in the Corps Songster Brigade and is also a talented cook. ! Nicola Poore is actively involved in choral ministry as the Songster Leader at Parramatta Corps, the director of 2 other choral groups and a former member of the Sydney Staff Songsters. An enthusiastic composer/arranger, Nicola recently completed a double degree in Music and Education as a piano major and is now a teacher of music to children aged 5-17 years. Aside from musical pursuits, she is passionate about building relationships and leadership development in better serving the body of Christ.!
