He Came to Give Us Life from the Gowans and Larsson music ‘Jesus Folk’ is a staple of many a corps Sunday repertoire and this version provides the musicians to give it a real “Broadway Swing” feel. From the intro we are treated to a sustained bass line whilst the cornets sound out the famous intro to this Gowans and Larsson classic before the horns play triplet runs emulating the runs in the original composition. After the intro, the horns play the melody against the walking bass line and stabs for the Cornets and Troms. A contrast from the cornets and trombones with horns answering leads to the middle of the arrangement, allowing the soloist to stretch out on some standard jazz progressions before the band returns in full force for the final shout chorus.
