It is something in which we can all play a part and, by presenting Jesus’ command to love as he loved in a clear, enterprising and challenging manner,Robert Street opens more doors for us all.’ –General Lind Band.

The Salvation Army would be nothing without love. The love of God is its major resource. Salvationist the world over could not do what they do without love for both God and mankind. Love must always be ’right at the heart’ – of everything.

Written in harmony with General Linda Bond’s call – One Army, One Mission One Message – Robert Street’s Love – Right at the heart examines how Salvationist have a responsibility to one another, whilst taking their caring ministry to the world. It is an essential aspect of discipleship, and Jesus encouraged his disciples to love one another with the same depth of commitment that he had given them.

The first section of this book centres on his words – ‘Love one another’ – whilst the second section looks at specific implications of the second part of his command – ‘As I have loved you’.

One Army, One Mission, One Message! That’s the vision. That’s our aim. To achieve this unity of purpose we need Jesus at the heart of everything we are and do. Love – Right at the heart takes its message directly from the heart of Jesus. It’s unifying, all-embracing command – ‘Love one another as I have loved you’.

Being a spiritual leader – at any level p is a great privilege, It is also a sacred responsibility and, during my term of office as International Leader of The Salvation Army, I want to ensure - as far as possible – that all serving in leadership positions throughout the world do so with integrity and compassion. As you read on, you will see that Love – Right at the heart was born out of the passionate concern of Salvationist leaders who share similar hopes and aims. This give great encouragement, because when our hopes are centre in the love of Christ, our lives and mission will better reflect - his loving purposes. Of course, contributing to each other’s spiritual well-being is not only the prerogative of leaders. It is something in which we can all play a pat and, by presenting Jesus’ command to love as He loved in a clear, enterprising and challenging manner, Robert Street opens more doors for us all.

The calls and recommendations of the International Spiritual Life Commission* have made an increasing impact on the Army world and its ministry. Where they are embraced they enhance the spiritual life of God’s people and add to the Army’s authenticity. They also give evidence of true spiritual authority through encouraging the promotion of servant leadership as seen in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. One of the Commissions’ calls is to ‘our life together’. It urges Salvationists worldwide to ‘be open to support, guidance, nurture, affirmation and challenge from each other as members together of the Body of Christ’, Love – right at the Heart offers ample opportunity to embrace this and to do so together – in groups – particularly at corps level.

I encourage you to take hold of this opportunity. See how Jesus’ command to love impacts your own life and, as a consequence the lives of those your life touches. With heart to God and hand to mankind, our greatest call is to love as Jesus loves. We can do it so much better is we do it unitedly – and with his blessing. Linda Bond, General IHQ
