On the surface, the story of Captains Normajean and Allan Honsberger, Salvation Army officers, seems tragic. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Normajean lost her husband, Al, to cancer in the midst of her own struggle. But she never gave up. She said, “God doesn’t ask of me something He hasn’t empowered me to do … I can’t change my circumstances. The only control I have is how I respond to them. I choose joy!” The deeper her struggles became, the more Normajean believed God’s promise that she would not just have life, “but have it more abundantly”
This new Others Press release features Normajean’s story of valiant victory. She succumbed to cancer at age 40, but throughout her eight–year battle, she lived above her circumstances. Her last appointment as a Salvation Army officer brought Normajean to Hempstead Citadel, a Long Island Salvation Army church. She earned the title “Captain Joy” when she delivered a sermon series on the book of Philippians. This book is a compilation of those sermons, interlaced with “Closer to Home” vignettes—alternately funny and poignant—that provide up–close glimpses of this remarkable woman of God. The book also comes with a DVD featuring Normajean’s testimony and Al’s music ministry. Normajean’s shining, victorious witness lives on in her challenge to us: Will You Choose Joy?
